What is Tree Pruning?

Pruning is the most common tree maintenance procedure. Pruning is often desirable or necessary to maintain safety, improve tree structure and health, satisfy customer goals, and make the tree aesthetically pleasing. Arborists should understand the biology and basic requirements of trees to undertake pruning that will optimize tree health and structure.

Pruning Objectives:

Pruning goals must consider tree growth and development and the effects on the tree over the long term. Objectives of pruning include:

  • Reducing the potential for tree or branch failure
  • Providing clearance
  • Reducing shade and wind resistance
  • Maintaining health
  • Influencing flower and fruit production
  • Improving a view
  • Improving aesthetics

Different Pruning Methods:

  • Crown cleaning - is the selective removal of dead, diseased, broken, or weakly attached branches. This is the most common pruning technique for landscape trees which corrects small growth problems before they have a chance to become large problems.
  • Crown thining - includes crown cleaning as well as a selective removal of branches to increase light penetration and air movement through the crown, and to improve structure, maintain interior foliage, and improve health of the tree. Proper thining should retain tree's natural shape and structural beauty.
  • Crown raising - includes removal of lower branches of the tree in order to provide clearance for buildings, signs, vehicles, pedestrians in the lines of sight.
  • Crown reduction - is used to reduce the size of tree. As per the city bylaw a 30% of living tissue can be reduced at any given pruning.
  • Crown restoration - consists of the selective removal of some watersprouts, stubs and dead branches to improve the tree's structure and form. Usually requires several prunings over a number of years.
  • Clearance pruning - is the removal of parts of the tree that are in close proximity to structures, powerlines, sidewalks, signs, lights or any other objects.
